Senators Want VA To Do More During Pandemic

Three US Senators are calling on the Department of Veterans Affairs to do more to help during the coronavirus pandemic.

From The Wall Street Journal

Sens. Chris Murphy (D., Conn.), Michael Bennett (D., Colo.) and Richard Blumenthal (D., Conn.) on Thursday sent a letter to VA Secretary Robert Wilkie, asking him to use the department’s powers to support civilian hospitals as they prepare for a potential onslaught of coronavirus cases.
“Now is the moment to expand the surge capacity in our healthcare system, before hospitals and other health care providers are overwhelmed,” they wrote. “At this critical inflection point, the entire resources of our federal government must be activated against covid-19.”

But can the VA handle the additional workload? And if so, at what cost to our veterans?

I am not so sure that right now is the best time for the VA to try something like this. Our veterans are having enough difficulty getting the medical care they were promised and the above senators’ request could turn difficulties into impossibilities. There has to be other avenues for the federal government to take before they negatively impact our veterans.
