No High School Sports This Fall

The Virginia High School League, the governing body for public school sports, announced today that fall sports will not be played this fall.

The sports season for High School will start in mid-December and will include the following winter sports; basketball, gymnastics, indoor track, swim and dive, and wrestling. That leaves out football, which is a big deal to a lot of local communities throughout the commonwealth.

Football is scheduled to start on March 1st, along with the rest of the usual fall sports; volleyball, golf, cheerleading, cross country, and field hockey.

The third season, the spring season, will start in April and include baseball, lacrosse, outdoor track, soccer, softball, and tennis.

However, this is all subject to change based on the unpredictable actions of our overwhelmed governor, who has shown he has no idea how to handle the covid-19 pandemic. If Governor Northam unilaterally decides to pull us back to what his administration calls Phase 2, then everything could be canceled. Or, if Northam unilaterally decides to push us forward to what they are calling Phase 4, then maybe today’s announced plans will change. But for now, don’t expect to be in the stands this October to cheer on your local High School football team.
