Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

Rep. Nancy Pelosi was voted in as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives today. Her term as Speaker can be described as something old (she used to be Speaker), something new (she takes over for Paul Ryan), something borrowed (she has promised her younger delegation that if Democrats can hold the majority for the next several cycles she will step down as Speaker after two terms), something blue (she’s a Democrat).

Speaker Pelosi only captured 220 votes, missing 15 Democrat votes for a unanimous party consent. Republican Kevin McCarthy was elected Minority Leader. Both party leaders are from California. Why the congress is looking to California for leadership is something I’ll never understand.

Expect Speaker Pelosi to have her hands full this term. Democrats have promised to present articles of impeachment on President Donald Trump. The reasons vary like the weather. One Democrat promises to file the same articles he tried last year, that call for impeachment because Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. Some Democrats want to wait for Robert Mueller’s investigation to wrap up, but it appears they don’t care what the conclusions of that drawn out witch hunt will be. Two years into Trump’s presidency and there has been ZERO indictments involving the mythical Russian collusion nonsense that was supposed to be the reason for the Mueller investigation. Nothing. Zip. Nada.

According to CNN’s Don Lemon, there will be at least 17 investigations “into pretty much every aspect of [Trump’s] life.” Is that proper oversight?

So far real legislative proposals are tough to find in the new congress. Democrats are all about their mindless resist movement. But the first thing for Speaker Pelosi is to negotiate the end of the partial government shutdown. Trump won the White House on the promise of increasing border security so it would be appropriate for the new congress to honor that.

We are stuck with Nancy Pelosi as Speaker for now. Hopefully, this won’t be a marriage that lasts longer than two years.
