Senate Democrats Refuse To Protect The Most Vulnerable

A very sad vote took place yesterday at the US Senate. Senate Democrats prevented a bill from moving forward that would have protected infants who were born alive during a failed abortion. The control of radical pro-abortion groups such as Planned Parenthood and NARAL on weak Democrats could not be more evident.

The bill was called Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act and it was offered by Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska. On the Senate floor Sasse said, “Picture a baby, that’s already been born, gasping for air. That’s the only thing that today’s vote is actually about. Nothing in this bill touches abortion access.” And yet, somehow this was rejected.

Every Republican voted in favor of it with the exception of 3 who didn’t vote. Every Democrat voted against it with the exception of senators Doug Jones, Bob Casey, and Joe Manchin, who were decent enough to vote for it.

Virginia’s two senators, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, voted against it.

The announced presidential candidates, senators Kamala Harris, Cory Booker (I am Spartacus!), Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, Amy Klobuchar, and Bernie Sanders, all voted against it.

The bill failed 53 to 44. It needed to receive 60 votes for cloture before it could move on for a floor vote.

Infanticide is already illegal, but the inhumane comments from Virginia’s Governor Ralph Northam describing the killing of a child moments after it is born sparked the need for a law to clarify that children who survive a botched abortion deserve to be protected. Northam made his grotesque comments in defense of Delegate Kathy Tran’s HB2491, which would have allowed abortion right up to the moment of delivery. Northam decided to go one step further when he said, “The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and mother.” That’s inhumane.

NARAL called Sasse’s bill “extreme.” Planned Parenthood put out notice that they expected the Democrats in their pocket to vote against it. Too sacred to stand up to the abortion lobby, 44 Democrats in the Senate caved. What a despicable display it was.

Senate Democrats have proven, once again, that they value campaign donations from radical abortion groups over sound legislation that would protect the most vulnerable of all.

We leave you with Senator Tim Scott’s floor speech on this bill. His words are powerful. We wish Virginia’s senators had enough sense to listen.
