Remembering Patriotism

On this day in 1942 a woman in Virginia wrote a very nice letter to the governor asking if her extra vegetables were needed by the Armed Services.

In her letter she writes-

As I will have more than my needs and I feel if I do have more it is only the patriotic and right thing to do, is to give it to our armed Services. I’m canning as much as possible for this special reason….

Sir, what I would like to know is whether the Army will accept? I realize they have to be very strict about what the boys eat and I sure hope so as my two sons are in there and have to eat.

I love this request. In our current political environment it seems that only negative stories are published. I hope this short blog post will be a pleasant reminder that there are a lot of good people out there and that everyone can help our country in one way or another. Also, I hope this reminds us to study history, there is a lot of good history to learn.

VirginiaMemory.com, a great source for Virginia history, has the whole letter transcribed, linked here.
